How
to get there.
Out
of Season - October to April
Although
there is an Airport in Kalamata it only operates from mid May
to Mid October and then only for charter flights. Out of season
the only alternative is to fly to Athens. Flights from UK airports
are easy to obtain, particularly Easyjet from Luton and Gatwick.
The walking holidays run weekly, from Sundays to Thursdays leaving
a day to ‘do your own thing’ so it is recommended
that you fly into Athens either overnight on Fridays or on the
Saturday where you will be met and brought to the Mani stopping
off to see the Corinth Canal on the way. You will be returned
to Athens for your homeward journey. If you want to make your
own way to the Mani and Stoupa, buses and taxis run from the new
airport to the bus station where buses run to Kalamata a journey
of some 4 hours. From Kalamata it is wise to hire a taxi to Stoupa
as the buses do not run frequently.
Accommodation can be arranged in Stoupa or one of the other villages,
usually in apartment blocks. Occasionally it is possible to rent
a property and for a party this may prove to be less expensive.
However as most properties are situated in the mountain villages
car hire would prove an additional expense.
In
Season – mid May to Mid October
• The easy option is to book a holiday with one of the many
tour companies who operate in Stoupa, arranging the walking (at
the same time) with WalkMani.
• Alternatively, seats may be available on the charter flights
to Kalamata (from Manchester, Birmingham, Gatwick and Newcastle)
and accommodation can be separately arranged. This is an expensive
option as flights cost as nearly as much as a holiday.
• Fly to Athens as described above.
• Please note that in the high season it can be difficult
to arrange separate accommodation as all rooms are booked through
the tour companies.
